Prevention Education Program

The Prevention Education Program is based on a public health model for stopping the outbreak of violence before it starts by teaching individuals to think critically about gender norms and constructed ideas about concepts that can lead to behaviors that kindle bullying and violence. The organization recognizes this as the Primary Prevention approach, which is the main goal of the program.

Volunteers needed for assistance with Prevention Education Program

The Hays-Caldwell Women's Center is looking for volunteers to assist with the Prevention Education Program. The program educates local schools, organizations and families by explaining how individuals can be active in preventing the abuse before it starts.

The Prevention Education Program creates presentations for clients that focus on sexual violence, Internet safety, child abuse and safety planning for victims.

The Prevention Education Program invites the community to get involved in their mission to create an environment where violence and abuse are not tolerated. Volunteers provide a plethora of services for the organization, specific to the strengths of each volunteer.

"Volunteers serve clients, watch children, do office work, grounds keeping, data entry, videography, public speaking and attend events," said Director of Development and Community Partnerships Charles Vestal.

"I heard about the Women's Center participating in Bobcat Build," said Texas State University Anthropology major Shelby Jenkins. "Since then I've come back on my own to volunteer."

The center will be hosting their 28th Annual Auction on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the auction are used to provide service for abuse victims in the Hays and Caldwell counties. The auction will be held in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom at the Texas State University-San Marcos.

"The auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year," said Volunteer Coordinator Kate Shaw. "We are always looking for people to volunteer for our special events."

Volunteers for the auction are asked to be available from 4-10 p.m. Volunteers assist in auction set-up, bid sheet monitoring and post-auction clean up. For more information on the auction of how to get involved with the Hays-Caldwell Women's Center, visit www.hcwc.org or check out their Facebook page.
